There is very few things in this world that are more sad than a party that is beautifully set up outside, but is forced inside due to rain. I know that there are a great many things that are more sad than this; I was just trying to add some drama to this post. Anyway.  No matter how much we prepare or schedule, the weather doesn’t always see our save the date and remember to change its course on the day of our celebration.

Any time you throw an outdoor party, you need to remember to have an indoor backup plan in place in case the weather decides to become uncooperative. Not every house can be prepared for such a situation that is why you may even want to ask a friend or family member to have his or her home ready in case the party needs to move. Weather is one of the most difficult things for which to plan when preparing any kind of special occasion. For this reason a back up plan is always necessary. While we haven’t needed to resort to such a method yet. My wife and I at least had a friend who had been invited to the party and was willing to make his house a secondary party base in case of rain. Luckily we didn’t need to move indoors, but it was nice to know that the option was there.

Of course if you live somewhere where rain is as rare as leprechauns you may not need to make an secondary plan, but for most people if rain can be a problem, it will be. I live in Chicago, the land of random rain, and this type of plan always needs to be in place for us when we want to do an outdoor celebration.

If you do decide to make a backup plan, make sure you don’t use all of your resources on decorations and supplies for outside. Wow! I can’t believe it is already here. My wife and I got all of the food, and we are having some people over to have a fun 4th of July party tomorrow. We got some traditional favorites like hamburgers and hotdogs, and we also got some brats for the occasion. I can’t wait to start up that grill and get everything going.

The 4th is more than just decorations and good food. It is really a day to be thankful and to realize all we have as Americans. My wife an I don’t go crazy buying patriotic party decorations for around the house, but we did buy a few party supplies just to make things look a little more festive than usual. My wife bought a few American flag beverage napkins along with some paper plates that will make the meal festive and help us during clean up.

One of our favorite times of the 4th of July is to go to Indiana and watch all of the fireworks over the lake at my grandparents camper at Jellystone Park. There are fireworks all over the area and with how high they are on the lake you get a great view of all of the celebrations going on in the area.You should check it out sometime to see some of the fun patriotic activities they have going on over there. This year we are staying at our house, but we love to camp on the 4th and take in nature…or at least, more nature than we usually get to take in.

Everyday it just amazes me how quickly the year is moving. It seems like yesterday I was shoveling the driveway the day after New Year, and now the 4th of July is coming up in a week or so. The 4th of July for me and my family is a time to have some fun, barbecue, and revel in thanks for being a part of a country that gives me the freedom that it does.

I can’t believe it has been 11 years since the last Toy Story movie. Pixar is just incredible for being able to come out with a new concept to take the movie to new, fun, and entertaining places. Let me just start by saying that I am not much of a sports guy. I played soccer, basketball, and baseball all through high school, but I do not have much will or stamina to sit through a game that is on T.V.. I do, however, have many friends that love sports and since I have a fairly large T.V. and the room for people to move around without being cramped, my house ends up being the landing ground for the big games.

I know you are thinking, “If you don’t like games, how can you stand to have them on at your home?” All I can say is, I love to have friends over to share conversations and experience life in great moments. While I don’t typically just sit down to watch the game, I do get into a game if everyone else is bringing the intense atmosphere that is so automatic when everyone’s hearts and minds get centered on a team, and they are all sharing in a moment of joy (or sorrow depending on the team) together. My wife watches with me sometime, but she usually crafts with some of the other guys wives while we watch the game in the basement. We don’t have people over for games very often, but every once in a while we do.

If you are like most people…most geeky people like myself…you went to see Iron Man 2 at midnight. If you are even more like me…a super geek…you hosted an Iron Man 2 party before the showing. I know you have probably lost a large amount of respect for me, but what can I say, I am excited about the Iron Man film.

I had some friends come over to my wife and my house before going over to the theater and we watched the first Iron Man while sitting in a room filled with all of the Iron Man 2 birthday party supplies we could get. Sorry I did not get to write last week. My niece was having her 2nd birthday party. Talk about a great time. The party took all day, for the most part, so I did not have a chance to get back and write anything.

Where to begin?

My sister-in-law did a wonderful job decorating for the party using Garden Fairy birthday party  supplies for the main theme for the party. In addition to the supplies included in the pattern, she did a lot of unique decorating using tulle and similar materials mixed with flowers to make the party look extra beautiful. She told me that she used a lot of supplies that had been left over from my brother and her wedding two years ago. Talk about resourcefulness.

Amidst the beautiful decorations, she also made a very unique cake and some delicious food for snack and dessert. She used a souffle cup which most people use for cupcakes, and put ice cream balls in them with a little bit of fudge so everyone could have a hand full of Sundae. I though it would be messy, but  the cupcake cups held the ice cream well and made the party that much more enjoyable. The cake that she made looked like a town…literally! There was a base that had a series of houses made out of different delicious materials. She said it took her about 7 hours to assemble. My sister-in-law is serious about partying.
