I don’t think there are many types of fun, random celebrations like a luau party. What other type of party can you think of that allows you to dress in a hula skirt, do the limbo, consume a nice drink in a festive cup, and play some Hawaiian music all at the same time. Though the people that can do all of those things at the same time do frighten and confuse me.

Most of the time a party is in celebration of something: a birthday, promotion, anniversary, and so on; something of worth and in need of recognition. The end of a summer is a bummer in my house. Our family does a lot together over the weeks of summer. Since I am a teacher I have been lucky enough to be off when the kids are off and we spend our time taking road trips, hitting the nearby pool, and just enjoying each other’s company. Needless to say, when the days of August begin to come to an end we will not be rejoicing in the end of all this free time.

Over the years, however, we have learned to cope in our own way. Instead of mourning the end of summer we celebrate it with a huge sendoff that has become a favorite among our family and friends. In the last post I talked about my reputation among those who know me – and even those who don’t – for being a bit on the “cheap” side. I am money conscious to be sure. In our house there is nothing better than summer. This is because both my husband and I are teachers; and so, when school is out for our kids it is also out for us and we are able to spend the entire summer as a family - taking trips and enjoying relaxed days together. In the last post I talked about the upcoming party for our fifth graders who were soon to be celebrating the end of their elementary school career. One of the many traditions that have long accompanied this time of the year is the throwing of the fifth grade party by the parents. This is not a party that is school sanctioned; the fifth grade parents are responsible for all of the planning and for paying for the entire event. And so it was up to us – the planning committee – to make sure that the party was fun as well as affordable.

In just one short month my daughter will graduate from fifth grade, leaving elementary school and graduating on to middle school in September. This is a really bittersweet time. I recently moved into a new home that I absolutely love. But above all else, my favorite part about the house is the pool in the backyard. No matter what the economy happens to be doing at the present moment I never lose sight of the fact that there are people out there that have it a lot worse than I do. Volunteering and giving back to the community is what makes me happy; and it certainly allows me to stop focusing so much on myself and what is going on in my own life. One of the charities that are near and dear to my heart deals with children who have been diagnosed with cancer. I am honored to be involved with them and I give as much time as I can every month to helping them in their endeavors.

I work for a nonprofit organization that helps families in need right here in our community. I love my work; every day is different and I am charged with finding new and creative ways to fund our very important mission.
