I love a baby shower; I love going to baby showers and giving baby showers because they are all about the welcoming of new life and what could be better than that? I have given several baby showers in my adulthood but none was more special than the one I hosted for my sister when she was having my niece last year. I was so excited to make the party something truly special and to honor my sister and welcome my niece into the family that was beyond excited to meet her.

I took great pains making sure that every detail of my sister’s baby shower was perfect; and this was no small feat as it turned out that during the planning I happened to lose my job. I immediately set out to find something else but in the meantime we were watching every penny and this meant that I had to really be mindful of what I was spending on the shower. Luckily, by the time that my layoff happened much of the shower had already been paid for including the facility, the food, the invitations, and the gifts that I had gotten her. In the last post I talked about our community’s annual Halloween event – one of many events that the community throws each year but certainly the most popular. As community events planner for our recreation council I am in charge of organizing these events – something that I begin to tackle many months ahead of time as they take careful planning. For the Halloween event my job entails arranging for craft and food vendors as well as lining up the many activities that our community has come to expect including the Halloween parade.

When you work in a particular type of business you are always working somewhat ahead of yourself. My job, for instance, as a community event planner for the area recreation council means that I am constantly planning events that are months ahead of where we are on the actual calendar. Take now, for example. It is the middle of summer but I am already working quite steadily on events that will take place in the fall including the town’s Halloween party that we organize every year.

Actually the Halloween event is one of our biggest of the year and includes a full parade in which costumed children can participate, craft and food vendors, rides, games, and a whole variety of family activities including pumpkin picking and hayrides. It’s a really great day and one that the town looks forward to each and every year. As a result of its popularity it has grown to an enormous size over the years and has required some careful planning to make sure it all comes together which is where I come in.

Part of what I do every year is to make sure that all of the vendors are lined up and ready to go and that we have all the Halloween party supplies to make the event as festive as possible. Every summer – for the past five years – my entire family meets in North Carolina for one week where we rent a huge house on the beach and have an amazing vacation/reunion. Because my family lives all up and down the east coast – with one of my brothers also on the west coast – this summer vacation has become something that we all look forward to as a chance to reconnect and to make sure that our children establish relationships with their cousins. September will begin my first year as a teacher. Having just graduated and gone through the student teaching program – and miraculously coming across an open position in the school in which I completed my student teaching – I am absolutely ready to tackle my first year. First birthdays are always a big celebration but our son’s first birthday is going to be even bigger than most. We adopted him when he was three months old from another country and the process was something that I cannot even explain in terms of emotional ups and downs. It took so much for us to get him and when he finally became a part of our family the joy that we felt was overwhelming. We were just so happy to have him home after so many back and forth trips and so much paperwork. Now that he is here we want to celebrate his first birthday in a way that honors our journey and allows all of our family and friends who stood with us every step of the way the chance to celebrate too.

So needless to say we are not talking about a small party here. We are lucky enough to have the grounds to host an outdoor party for a large crowd and because our son was born in the summer we will primarily keep the festivities in the backyard. Because it is outside we are planning on a carnival theme with appropriate party supplies, games for all ages of kids (and adults), food, entertainment, music, and the works.

In the last post I talked about how the Internet has significantly changed the way that I shop for nearly everything including party supplies. As one of seven children, I – like my siblings – have to plan my parties carefully because even just the “family” means a lot of people in my house at once. I need to coordinate food, party supplies, and certainly budget in a very strict manner so that I still get what I want but don’t overspend or make myself crazy in the process.

The Internet has opened up so many possibilities for all of us, not the least of which is the potential to shop for things that we may not have had access to previously – and certainly at lower prices than we have been accustomed to paying. In the last post I talked about my reputation among those who know me – and even those who don’t – for being a bit on the “cheap” side. I am money conscious to be sure. As a stay at home mom who works part time I am constantly mindful of cost and I work long and hard to make sure that I am doing all that I can to save us as much money as possible. I always hold to my personal philosophy of spending money on things that are worth the extra expense and avoiding the extraneous costs for everyday items for which people have become accustomed to over paying.

Party supplies were always a thorn in my side because as much as I needed them (you need plates and utensils to serve food after all) and wanted them (what good is a luau without luau party supplies?) I could not bring myself to pay the ridiculous costs that so many party supply stores charged. What was there left to do?
