No matter what the economy happens to be doing at the present moment I never lose sight of the fact that there are people out there that have it a lot worse than I do. Volunteering and giving back to the community is what makes me happy; and it certainly allows me to stop focusing so much on myself and what is going on in my own life. We are all struggling right now; I have friends who have not only lost their job but have lost their home. It’s hard to understand what it all means but I find that by helping others I am able to give myself a gift.

One of the charities that are near and dear to my heart deals with children who have been diagnosed with cancer. This particular organization delivers everything they can to families including emotional support, medical information, and even food and basic needs. I am honored to be involved with them and I give as much time as I can every month to helping them in their endeavors.

One of the things that I do every year for them is help organize a big Luau event; something that really gets out the support. We hold it in the spring when everyone is ready to come out of hiding and have a party; and it’s one of the events that nets us the most donations every year.

Of course, with any charity event, there is the challenge of minimizing your expenditures so that you can net as much money as possible. I am a diehard party lover; any excuse I have for throwing a party I will gladly take. When I was small the only graduation I ever remember attending was that of my older siblings as they graduated from high school and then college. My own graduations were marked occasions that I remember fondly as they included the gathering of loved ones in joined celebration. I am a firm believer in celebrating all applicable holidays. Life is full of so many tough times and so much hard work that any opportunity you can have to kick back and have some fun is more than allowed. There is nothing like the spring to get you motivated again and doing things that you completely avoided during the winter. I myself am one for hibernating during the winter. I married into an Irish family who is absolutely serious about St. Patrick’s Day. As a room mother in my daughter’s classroom I am often called upon to furnish snacks, drinks, crafts, and other activities for the various parties they have throughout the year. It seems absolutely crazy to say but my son is graduating from high school in June. Literally five seconds ago – or so it seems – he was five years old and now he’s getting ready to go to college.
