Some people would call me cheap. But those who really know me know that I will not spend more money than is necessary for items that are overpriced to begin with; it’s tantamount to throwing money out the window to me. I currently am at home with my kids and while I work a part time job the money I earn doesn’t really stretch too far. I consider it part of my job while I am home to find ways to save my family money and I am great at my job whether you think I’m cheap or not!

My philosophy is this: there are things that are worth the price and on which you should not skimp and things that are not. I don’t mind paying a little bit more for clothing that I know will last for a few seasons and I won’t skimp when it comes to buying healthy food (even though I still clip coupons like mad). But when it comes to consumables that I’m going to use and more than likely replace after use, I will not spend major money. This is especially true when it comes to party supplies. Look; I love to throw a party as much as the next guy and I’m all about having great food and lots of fun. And I know that party supplies can set a mood and really make the party something special. But, to me, it’s not worth paying some of the absolutely crazy costs that I see all the time in the local party supply stores.

“Are you serious?” you may be asking. Well…yes actually. Shopping ahead has been the sustenance of the retail business for as long as memory serves me. Just as soon as one holiday is over the next is on the shelves and while it used to make me nuts (“Stop rushing me,” I would think to myself.) I began to really get in the groove of shopping ahead. I learned that I could still be in the moment and enjoying what was happening in the here and now while taking steps to be as organized as possible for the future – and saving money in the process. It’s the reason that I buy all of my Christmas wrapping paper in the stores the day after Christmas when it’s less than half price and it’s the reason why I shop for all my party supplies online months ahead of when I need them. I just like the feeling of knowing that I have everything I need on hand and I’m ready to go without scrambling around for particular items and being left disappointed or worse – overspending to the point of insanity.

Some time ago I made the decision to stop making things so much harder on myself than was necessary. It seems that I long had a knack for taking the long road when, with a little forethought, I could have saved myself a lot of aggravation. This winter and spring I embarked upon what seemed to be a never-ending construction project – the installation of our new in-ground pool in our backyard. Thankfully the construction was not inside our home; but nevertheless it was stressful for everyone. We wondered if it would even be complete in time for the start of the season. It is in fact done and now the only thing left is to throw a great pool party to introduce our newest addition in the grandest style.

Summer – at least for our kids – is officially here; and we are well on our way to planning the many activities that we will do over the coming months to make it a fun-filled summer vacation. Because I am a teacher I am fortunate enough to be able to be home with my kids over the summer so I would never consider sending them off to camp.

But because I AM a teacher and because I don’t want my kids to miss out on the fun of camp, we have created our own camp of sorts – right here in our home. I also watch my niece and nephew throughout the summer and so it is the four of the kids at our makeshift “camp” where we have theme weeks and many fun activities to fill the warm days.

The five of us take a lot of time at the beginning of the summer to plan our camp calendar and the activities that will correspond to each week/theme. We do outings, plan food, and even do arts and crafts projects that go along with our themes. I am one busy person. And like most busy people I am continually doing things at the last minute simply because there isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done. My sister is expecting her first child – my first niece or nephew – and my family could not be more excited. It’s been difficult, however, sharing in this special time with her because she lives so far away.
